Program Requirements

Praxis Test

All individuals seeking a teacher license in Deaf Education must take and pass the prior to enrolling in EDSE 657.

Sign Language Proficiency Evaluation

All students in the èßätv deaf education master’s degree program must demonstrate the ability to communicate, with advanced proficiency in American Sign Language and/or a sign system. In order to complete this requirement you must pass a sign language proficiency evaluation prior to enrolling in EDSE 657. In order to prepare for the evaluation you should enroll in advanced sign language courses, interact with deaf adults in professional and social settings, and if necessary contract with a private tutor.

  • Practicum Information

    As part of your experience in EDSE 652, EDSE 654, and EDSE 655, you will have field-based requirements to work with a student who is deaf or hard of hearing. It is your responsibility to find a student in your area. This practicum experience is a valuable and critical part of your coursework.

    Practicum is the culminating experience of the training program.

    To be eligible you must:

    • Complete all course work
    • Pass the PRAXIS II DHH exam (#5272) or your state test* (where applicable)
    • Pass the èßätv sign language proficiency evaluation.

    You may submit your application if you are waiting on scores, but your application will not be processed until all scores are received.  You must also complete the fingerprinting requirement. You must have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for EDSE 657

    Applications are due in early September for a practicum in the spring, and early February for a fall semester practicum. Summer practicums are not available. The application for practicum is distributed via Canvas.

    If you are currently employed as a teacher of students who are deaf or hard of hearing, you may do a contracted internship (rather than a student teaching practicum) in your current job with permission from you advisor and your school supervisor. You must be working full-time, as a teacher of students who are Deaf or Hard of HearingASL teachers, interpreters, general education teachers, special education teachers and para-professional positions do not qualify for this practicum experience.

    Student Teacher Candidates are responsible for identifying the program and/or district where she or he want to work. The practicum coordinator will then contact the district to verify placements. The èßätv practicum coordinator along with your advisor will make the final determination for placement. Every attempt will be made to honor your request; however, school districts have policies and procedures that will factor into final placement decisions.
