As part of your experience in EDSE 652, EDSE 654, and EDSE 655, you will have field-based
requirements to work with a student who is deaf or hard of hearing. It is your responsibility
to find a student in your area. This practicum experience is a valuable and critical
part of your coursework.
Practicum is the culminating experience of the training program.
To be eligible you must:
- Complete all course work
- Pass the PRAXIS II DHH exam (#5272) or your state test* (where applicable)
- Pass the èßätv sign language proficiency evaluation.
You may submit your application if you are waiting on scores, but your application
will not be processed until all scores are received. You must also complete the fingerprinting
requirement. You must have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for EDSE 657
Applications are due in early September for a practicum in the spring, and early February
for a fall semester practicum. Summer practicums are not available. The application
for practicum is distributed via Canvas.
If you are currently employed as a teacher of students who are deaf or hard of hearing,
you may do a contracted internship (rather than a student teaching practicum) in your
current job with permission from you advisor and your school supervisor. You must be working full-time, as a teacher of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. ASL teachers, interpreters, general education teachers, special education teachers
and para-professional positions do not qualify for this practicum experience.
Student Teacher Candidates are responsible for identifying the program and/or district
where she or he want to work. The practicum coordinator will then contact the district
to verify placements. The èßätv practicum coordinator along with your advisor will make
the final determination for placement. Every attempt will be made to honor your request;
however, school districts have policies and procedures that will factor into final
placement decisions.
