Captioning

For assistance determining if your materials have captions, please see our Captioning Quick Start Guide. If you are creating lectures via Panopto please see this video: . If you have a request from a student in your course for Captioning or Transcripts, please complete the .

For larger files, please upload them via the request form. If your video file is too large to be uploaded (>16MB) please share a One Drive link with DRCTechnology@unco.edu, you may also bring it in to the Disability Resource Center office on a flash drive or DVD.

Accepted File Types


The DRC can have the following file types captioned:

  • .AIFF
  • .ASF
  • .AVI
  • .FLV
  • .F4V
  • .MOV
  • .MPG
  • .MP3
  • .MP4
  • .MTS
  • .M2T
  • .M4A
  • .M4B
  • .M4V
  • .RA
  • .RM
  • .WAV
  • .WEBM VP8/VP9
  • .WMA
  • .WMV
  • DVDs (please allow 4-6 weeks for processing)
  • YouTube Clips

 If the file type is not listed above, we cannot accept it. (i.e. links other than YouTube, VHS tapes, and cassette tapes)

Captioning Quick Start Guide


CHECKING TO SEE IF CONTENT HAS CAPTIONS-DVDS

  • For DVDs, flip to the back cover of the DVD. In many cases, DVDs with
    closed captions will have the logo on the back.
  • If the logo is not there, try inserting the DVD and trying one of the following
    options:
    • Lyrics, Captions and Subtitles
      • Right click anywhere in the screen
      • Choose: Lyrics, Captions and Subtitles
      • Choose: The your language
  • Special Features
    • As soon as Windows Media Player opens, right click on the DVD
      button on the lower left of the screen
    • In the menu that appears, choose: Special Features
    • Choose: Captions, and then English

CHECKING TO SEE IF CONTENT HAS CAPTIONS

  • Open the file in Windows Media Player
    • Turn Captions On if Available
      • Right click anywhere in the screen
      • Choose: Lyrics, Captions and Subtitles
      • Choose: On if Available


STEPS FOR WATCHING WITH CAPTIONS

  1. Insert DVD, menu will appear providing option to open in Windows
    Media Player
  2. DVD title menu will appear, select the VIEW WITH SUBTITLES
    option
  3. At the bottom left of the screen it will say DVD with a little arrow for a
    drop down menu, Click the Arrow
  4. From drop down menu, choose Special Features and then Captions
  5. Choose your language

Google has provided information about a tutorial about uploading captions to
YouTube.
