Exceptions

All students who wish to take an entry-level mathematics, statistics, or chemistry course such as MATH 120, MATH 124, MATH 125, MATH 127, MATH 131, MATH 171, STAT 150, STAT 160, or CHEM 111 are required to take the ALEKS assessment unless they meet the various exceptions listed below.

Students registering for MATH 181 are not required to take the assessment.  These students include special education majors, early childhood education majors, and elementary education majors.

If you have taken MATH 125 or MATH 127 at UNC, or have received transfer college credit, and received a grade of C or higher (C- is not acceptable), then you can enroll in MATH 131 or 171 without taking the ALEKS assessment.

If you have received transfer college credit for MATH 124 and received a grade of C or higher (C- is not acceptable), then you can enroll in MATH 125, MATH 127, or STAT 150 without taking the ALEKS assessment.

Students seeking to enroll in MATH 120 or STAT 150 and who have successfully completed with a C- or higher MAT 050, MAT 090, or MAT 092 at a Colorado community college are exempt from further placement testing and should enroll directly into those courses. Or if students have a score of 500 or higher on the SAT Math Section, they can enroll in MATH 120 or STAT 150 without taking the ALEKS assessment. This also applies if your ACT math score is 19 or higher. These scores must be no more than three years old.

Students seeking to enroll in MATH 124 who have successfully completed with a C- or higher MAT 055, MAT 093, or MAT 099 are exempt from further placement testing and should enroll directly into MATH 124.
