Selection Process

Many components go into our admission criteria that help us see who you are. GPA and the HESI exam give us a glimpse of how you perform academically. The Casper assessment and the Standardized Recommendation Surveys look at your professional traits. These traits include teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. These admission criteria come together to create your 鈥渁dmission score鈥�:

• Admission GPA - 50%

  Admission GPA will be calculated using the most recent 45 credit hours of coursework and GPA from all completed nursing prerequisite courses.

• HESI assessment - 20%

  The HESI score is generated by averaging the scores from the 4 test categories (required subcategories):

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge
  • Basic Math Skills
  • Anatomy and Physiology

  There is no total or subcategory minimum score.

  You may only submit one HESI score/transcript each calendar year.  You may submit HESI scores that are more than a year old.

  You may only take the exam once within the window of July 14th, 2025 and September 4th, 2025 by 5pm (MT).

• CASPER assessment - 10%

  Casper is a soft-skill assessment. Casper measures 10 competencies: collaboration, communication, empathy, equity, ethics, self-awareness, resilience, professionalism, problem solving and motivation.

  Casper uses a unique, open, video and text response format, leading to more authentic, in-the-moment responses. You can justify your reasoning, express your values, and share your individual perspectives and experiences.

  Each test is rated by multiple independent raters, with a different rater for each scenario. The final score is an average of all raters鈥� unique impressions, reflecting diverse perspectives on the applicant鈥檚 performance. This reduces bias.

  CASPER test dates:

  August 2025	Tuesday, August 5th, 2025	6pm MST
  December 2024	Thursday, September 4th, 2025	6pm MST

• Standardized Recommendation Surveys - 10%

  The Standardized Recommendation Surveys will be in the form of a survey that will be sent to your references, one from an academic reference and one from a supervisory reference, requesting information about your ability to work with others, communication, flexibility, and other professional attributes you possess on a 1-5 point scale.

  To obtain the recommendations, you will need to input the contact information (name and email address) of the two people you have asked to complete the recommendation in NursingCAS.

• Earned credits at UNC - 10%

  The number of credits completed at UNC are assigned points and used in the overall admission score as outlined below.

  • 0-2 earned credits at UNC = 0 points
  • 3-5 earned credits at UNC = 1 point
  • 6-8 earned credits at UNC = 2 points
  • 9-11 earned credits at UNC = 3 points
  • 12-14 earned credits at UNC = 4 points
  • 15-17 earned credits at UNC = 5 points
  • 18-20 earned credits at UNC = 6 points
  • 21-23 earned credits at UNC = 7 points
  • 24-26 earned credits at UNC = 8 points
  • 27-29 earned credits at UNC = 9 points
  • 30 or more earned credits at UNC = 10 points
